The British Poultry Health and Welfare Strategy
The EIG has encouraged livestock sectors to take a coordinated and strategic approach to health and welfare to meet their own ends while supporting the delivery of the overarching Animal Health and Welfare Strategy (AHWS) for Great Britain
(1.2 MB) .The AHWS suggested that stakeholders may want to draw up their own health and welfare strategies to that end.
The British Poultry Council, the British Egg Industry Council and the National Farmers’ Union have developed a British Poultry Sector Poultry Health and Welfare Strategy which will be published shortly (as at 1 April 2008).
The Strategy, which explicitly shares the aims of the AHWS, presents a vision for poultry health and welfare and sets out 5 strategic objectives. It also identifies specific priorities for action and measures of success.
There will be a new Poultry Health and Welfare Group to “drive this Strategy to achieve a programme of sustainable health and welfare improvements in the GB poultry flock.” Draft Terms of Reference will also be presented in the Strategy document.
