Animal health and welfare

England Implementation Plan

Equines

The equine industry, working with Government, launched the 10-year Equine Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain in March 2007.  This was developed in response to the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy (AHWS) for Great Britain and its call for sectoral substrategies, in particular because the overall strategy said little specifically about horses.

The equine strategy presents a vision (page 5) for equine health and welfare in Britain.  It then defines 8 key aims (page 8) for the industry to realise that vision.  There are 19 actions (page 23) to help deliver these aims, each championed by different representative organisations within the equine industry.

These “Aim Champions” are responsible for setting the timetable and keeping work on track.  The British Horse Industry Confederation is responsible for ensuring that the Strategy is delivered and has set up a new Welfare Committee to facilitate regular meetings of the Aim Champions.
