England Implementation Plan: Aquaculture

Farmed trout

Inspired by the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy (AHWS) for Great Britain, the British Trout Association (BTA) has published a 5 year Draft Health and Welfare Strategy for the UK trout industry.  This covers all businesses growing or trading in trout and seeks support for action from all with a stake in the industry.

The draft strategy presents a vision for the health and welfare of farmed trout and defines 9 key aims for the industry to support the realisation of the vision.  There are 28 actions to help deliver these aims.

The Chairman of the BTA presented the draft Trout Health and Welfare Strategy for the UK at the EIG’s 17th Open Meeting.

The draft strategy and subsequent discussions can be found with the minutes of the EIG17 Open Meeting.

Ornamental fish

A subgroup of the Companion Animals Sector Council (CASC) is looking at how the vision of the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy (AHWS) for Great Britain can be taken forward for the ornamental fish sector.  This work is led by the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), assisted by the Federation of British Aquarists.
