Details

Quarantine facilities and centres for the imported birds, other than poultry, must be licensed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

APHA approve and inspect these premises on behalf of Defra, Scottish Government and Welsh Government.

Commission Regulation No 139/2013 (as amended) lays down the animal health conditions for the import of certain birds into the European Community from Third Countries.

In Great Britain, APHA administers the requirements of this Regulation and is responsible for:

  • approving avian quarantine centres and facilities to receive bird imports
  • checking imported birds when they arrive in the EU and issuing a Common Veterinary Entry Document (CVED) to the importer
  • supervising consignments of imported birds during quarantine and testing for signs of avian influenza and Newcastle disease
  • taking further action if avian influenza or Newcastle disease is suspected in a consignment of birds during quarantine.
