Importation of Garra rufa for use in spa or medical use
All tropical ornamental species importers need to be aware of new changes in trade and import requirements.
Many companies are opening ‘foot spas’ places where individuals can have manicures/ pedicures involving placing their hands/ feet in tanks of Garra rufa (Dr Fish/ nibble fish).
You can import animals for this trade but it is not covered by authorisations for the import of tropical ornamental aquatic animals. If you intend to import animals to supply this market you must apply to the Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) to change your authorisation before doing so.
Also when importing the animals for this trade they are not covered by the health certificate titled ‘health certificate for the import into the EU of ornamental aquatic animals intended for closed ornamental facilities’. The Border Inspection Posts (BIPs) will query, and possibly delay, large quantities of these animals being imported under ornamental procedures.
Applications to change your authorisation will be accepted either on the AAH2 application or in an email requesting the amendment. Also please quote your current authorisation number. Both should be sent to the FHI.
In addition to complying with the correct import procedures outlined above, all sites holding these animals must contact their local council environmental health department to ensure all public health and animal welfare requirements are met.
If you have any queries please contact the FHI.
